A Call to Conscience

Written by the Editor‑in‑Chief, Omolabake Daranijo

I believe in Nigeria. Not the Nigeria of headlines, but the Nigeria in us, in our hands, our choices, our conscience.

Making our country great again starts here, with truth:

1. Let’s be more conscious of our conscience. We know right from wrong. We feel it when we cut corners, when we look away, when we say, “it’s not my business.” The change we want outside starts with the standards we hold inside. No nation rises above the character of its people. So, let’s choose honesty, even when nobody is watching.

2. Our values are our real currency. Respect. Hard work. Community. Faith. We live these every day in our homes, greeting elders, helping neighbors, showing up for family. Now, let’s spend that same currency in public: in how we lead, how we vote, how we do business, how we treat the next person. Values don’t belong in proverbs alone. They belong in policy, in contracts, in traffic.

3. Accepting that things have to change is strength, not shame. Yes, some things are broken. Admitting it doesn’t mean we hate Nigeria. It means we love her enough to tell the truth. We can’t heal what we won’t face. And we can’t fix what we pretend is fine.

4. Hope is not wishful thinking, it’s work. A renewed, transformed Nigeria will not fall from the sky. It will be built by us, in small, stubborn decisions every day. The teacher who still teaches well. The policeman who refuses a bribe. The youth who builds instead of blames. The trader who gives correct change. That’s how nations are rebuilt, conscience by conscience.

5. We have the will and the power. We are 200 million strong. We are creative, loud, brilliant, and deeply connected. If we channel the same energy we use to survive into building, into holding ourselves and our leaders accountable, into protecting what is right, who can stop us?

Reflection

Nigeria’s best days are not behind us. They are ahead, if we choose them. So, I am choosing to believe. To be conscious. To live my values out loud. To do my part, no matter how small. Because I know that when enough of us decide that “better” is non‑negotiable, Nigeria will become the best of itself.

This is our country. This is our duty. This is our time.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
